Pine Needle Tea
Nature's Remedy Loaded with Vitamin C

by Leon Toille

It has been known for hundreds of years that a tea or broth made from hot water (do not boil) with 1/2 cup of pine needles is the cure for scurvy, and some varieties of pine produce a tea with more Vitamin C than is contained in 6 lemons! Let the tea steep for about two hours at least. Most pine needle teas are surprisingly not bitter...but if your tea a little bitter for your taste, add a little honey, preferably unpasteurized.

Jacques Cartier, one of the discoverer's of Canada, together with about half of his ship's crew, were saved from scurvy death (caused by lack of Vitamin C) when native people made a broth of pine needles when they came ashore...half the crew being dead already...and everyone drinking the tea survived.

Almost any variety of pine needles will work - when they are fresh and green (don't dry them out). Scientists also say there are many medicinal ingredients in pine needles besides Vitamin C. I have also used fresh green cedar "leaves" as well.

You don't need oranges and lemons in northern climates...health benefits are available from your nearest evergreen tree!

I tried it with some young cedar needle/leaves and honey. Not bad...
Tastes pretty much like it smells. Not bitter at all. Thanks Infidel.

actually, in addition to pine needles, if you have any rose bushes around, when the petals drop off and you see that little bud that forms, that is the rose hip---great Vit C. just pluck them off, dry them and store in a glass jar--makes a great tasting tea. if you have a vacuum sealer or one of those pump-n-seal things, that will work great. it is a really good idea to stock up on them now. i prefer the rose hips to the pine needles in taste as it is milder.

We have tremendous amount of Pine trees in Florida. Has anyone used a Florida variety Pine tree for this tea?

Curious if the taste was palatable and of course how long you steeped it..

Vitamin C tablets are so cheap though, you could store ten year's worth for about $100 - good to know, but don't rely on pine needles as your only source! No point getting scurvy for the sake of a few quid.

Any pine needles at all will work. As I posted previously, cedar tastes fine as well. Eastern Red Cedar grows all over the place. Yellow pine, slash pine, sand pine, it matters not. Just pour hot water over a half cup of fresh green needles and steep for a couple hours. Drink and pretend it's Christmas time.
Ferment and distill some juniper berries, drink up, then smack a cute little elf on the butt. Hohoho.:D

Ha! Thanks for the laugh!

It is about time someone came up with something useful for all these pine trees other than natural lightning rods!

Lol...
Yeah, they're also useful for punching holes in roofs during storms, allowing for the excuse for new skylights.

One of our resident idealists on GIM advocates pine seed sprouts as an excellent food source. I haven't tried that one, considering the relative difficulty of extracting the seeds from the cone. I keep meaning to ask him how he gets the seeds out without heating the cones, likely destroying the seeds ability to sprout.

I like picking mine outa squirrel poop. Of course if you wait a day or so they'll start sprouting and you can save yourself some work. :D
